About Hungary

Little do some people know, there's a Europe beyond Western Europe. Yes, it's true. And if you're reading this, that means you're in the know. That's the good news. The bad news is that like its Central and Eastern European neighbors, Hungary is getting to be more and more on the tourist radar - and with good reason. In this small country you can enjoy the life of the bustling capital city, charming villages, mountainous regions, ethnic diversity and mainland Europe's largest lake - it's all there waiting for you.

Hungary's capital, Budapest, is incredibly beautiful - it's considered by some to rank among the world's most beautiful cities, and its nicknames include the "Paris of the East" and "Queen of the Danube." It doesn't have a superiority complex, however, and its residents - like most Hungarians - are helpful and hospitable. Other cities and towns which warrant a visit include Eger (famous for its Bull's Blood wine), Miskolc (with its cave bath and spa) and Godollo (home of a former royal palace). Hungary proudly claims several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, both urban and rural. If you have your fill of the cities you can explore Hortobagy National Park or the area around Lake Balaton.

Sleeping cheap in Hungary isn't usually a problem - even outside of the capital city, where you'll find hostels a-plenty, you'll be able to find an inexpensive place to lay your head. In addition to the Hungary hostels you can browse on this page, keep an eye out for properties which are on working farms. Staying in hostels will certainly give you a better look at the local culture than staying in a luxury hotel would, and staying in a farmhouse is an even better way to get up close and personal with the locals. In either case, sleeping cheap will also give you an opportunity to meet up with fellow travelers and exchange travel tips and stories.

You can browse the Hungary hostels by clicking on the city names listed on this page. You can also let the computer do all the work for you - all you need to do is put your travel information into the search box on this page and the computer will tell you exactly what properties are available when you are going to be there. Then all you need to do is find the hostel that suits your personality. You may also want to visit the Budapest hostels page for more information.

If you're still in the planning process for your Hungary trip, you can find information about what to do and see in the country in our Hungary Travel Guide and also search for international airfare to Hungary.
